Madison Zuber Beowulf Essay Over time Beowulf, the oldest epic poem in the English language, has seen itself recreated through literature, graphic novels, music, opera and theatre, comics, board games, video games, and movies including Beowulf and Grendel directed by Sturla Gunnarsson which features actors such as Gerard Butler, Spencer Wilding, Sarah Polley, Stellan Skarsgard, Tony Curran and Mark Lewis. While some similarities between the movie and the epic are evident, the differences between the two are striking. The decision of the narrator to take out necessary explanatory details from the epic poem does not help the reader to understand why certain situations occurred. In the epic, the narrator immediately depicts Grendel as the antagonist, a person who is actively hostile towards someone, â€Å"conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by God,† (Anonymous, 40). The comparison between Grendel and Cain, the oldest son of Adam and E ve who murdered his brother Abel, shows the authors’ perceived tone towards the monster and opens up the storyline.
